According to the direction of “giving a good Chinese narrative and better communicating China’s message, and presenting a true, stereoscopic, and comprehensive China to the rest of the world”, this activity will focus on 9 overseas countries to carry out online thematic publicity activities, in order to publicize the cultural connotation of Jining that is widely concerned by overseas audiences, such as Confucian culture, canal culture, Water Margin culture, etc.
Jining, located in the southwest of Shandong Province, is the central city of Huaihai Economic Zone. Jining has profound cultural heritage, “the hometown of Confucius and Mencius” and “the City of Canal” are its important cultural name cards.
The fine traditional Chinese culture is the cultural root of the Chinese nation. Its ideas, humanistic spirit and moral standard are not only the core of Chinese’s thoughts and spirits, but also of great value in solving human problems. Wang Lei, deputy minister of Publicity Department of Jining municipal Party committee, said that Jining culture has deep inside information and rich connotation. It is hoped that this event will enable audiences at home and abroad to understand Jining, a famous historical and cultural city, realize the cultural connotation behind the city, tell the story of traditional Chinese culture, and promote cultural exchanges between China and foreign countries.

The culture of Confucius and Mencius has been an important part of Chinese culture for thousands of years. Together with CNS, Jining will join hands with overseas Chinese media to present compelling stories of the home of Confucius and Mencius, and write good articles about the canal culture.
Representative of overseas Chinese media attended the event virtually. Li shuangjie, president of Russian Chinese newspaper Dragon News, said that it is the responsibility of overseas Chinese media to give a good Chinese narrative and better communicate China’s message. “With the help of unprecedented spreading speed and breadth of digital media in the 5G era, we will present compelling stories of Jining to the whole world.”

Sun Ran, vice president and editor-in-chief of Japan Chinese newspaper LiveJapan, said that Japan and Jining face each other across the sea, have similarities in culture and cooperate very closely. She believes that Jining is rich in cultural tourism resources. World Heritage sites such as Temple of Confucius, Confucius Mansion and the Confucius family mausoleum, and many relics reflecting Confucius’s life in Nishan cultural tourism resort can be the publicity point to enhance the popularity of Jining, and become a reason to attract Japanese tourists.

This activity covered 9 countries on 5 continents, with the participation of 14 overseas Chinese media. It was released in Chinese, as well as English, French and Japanese. The media category involves newspapers, websites, Apps and Facebook, with a view to presenting the profound cultural connotation of Jining from multiple angles and dimensions.

It is estimated that the event will cover about 20 million overseas Chinese and other overseas groups. Ⅲ. Guidelines:
1. Centering on the theme, contestants would elaborate the connotation and enchantment of Jining’s culture from his own perspective.
2. Types of essays: Descriptive essay and narrative prose are mostly welcomed. Each contestant is encouraged to submit multiple works. Word count for each article is about 2000 words. (Pictures can be added into the essays. Be sure to indicate the source of the pictures). Contestants should write in an easy and fluent style with true feelings.
For cultural connotation, contestants could write about Confucianism, Jining’s canal culture, and Water Margin ;
For landscape and scenery, contestants could write about city experience and famous scenic spots.
3. Essays must be original, unpublished, and not have been submitted to other competitions. Each entry must be done individually representing the contestant’s own research, thinking, and writing. Plagiarized entries will be rejected.
4. No entry fee will be charged by any means. No entries will be rejected.
5. The organizing committee reserves the rights of interpretation of the terms and results of this competition. Participation in this event will be regarded as agreeing to abide by the rules of this event.

Submission of essay: from now till August 31 2022
Judging and ranking: September 1 – September 15 2022

Ⅵ. Awards: The judging panel is selected by the organizing committee. The awards can be specified as follows:
First Prize: 1500 RMB cash award (1 winner)
Second Prize: 1000 RMB cash award for each work (2 winners)
Third Prize: 800 RMB cash award for each work (3 winners)
Fourth Prize: 600 RMB cash award for each work (6 winners)
The decision of the judging panel on the results and selected winning essays would be published on 14 overseas media outlets.
Ⅶ. Any Other Business:
1. If the entries infringe the copyright of others’ works, the participants bear the liability. The organizer shall not be held responsible for this.
2. The organizing committee reserves the rights of final decision and interpretation of the terms and results of this competition. The judging rubric may be changed without notice. If any participant has any objection, he/she could withdraw from the competition and inform the organizing committee in time.
